Completed in 2018 as part of a regional public art project, the Noksapyeong Station Underground Art Garden was designed to turn an everyday place into a special place that is continuously used by citizens. In line with the project's intention, various public art exhibitions and art programs were held for about eight months from May to December 2019 under the themes of 'art', 'plants', and 'Yongsan Park (a story about the area)'. The exhibitions and programs included the 'Docent Program' and 'Tablet Experience Program,' which are programs linked to existing exhibits, and the 'Plant Detailing Exhibition,' 'Plant Detailing Drawing Class,' 'Exhibit: Bibi System', 'Pet Plant Seed Sharing Program', 'Garden Program', and 'Citizen Artwork Competition', an exhibition on the theme of the Noksapyeong area: Memory Book of Our Neighborhood' and 'Yongsan through the Eyes of an Artist'. In addition, live performances from various fields, walking tours around the perimeter of Yongsan Park, and ecological gardening programs were held.
In addition, the Underground Art Garden Festival was held from October 8 to October 13, 2019. Under the theme of "A fairytale urban art garden that travels through the subway," the festival featured four artists (Jeon Yuri, Yoon Minseob, Lee Sangwon, and Uhm Ah Rong) for six days, including art exhibitions ("Workshop in the Forest," "Alice in Wonderland," "City of Small People," and "Fantasy Garden"), civic engagement programs ("Illustration"), and a "Fantasy Garden").), civic participation programs ('Illustrated Gardening Mural Decorating', 'Line Drawing Work', 'Garden Program', 'Leaf Chat Room'), and side events (Forest Gallery Lounge, Mini Concert, Green Pop-up Cafe).
In this way, the Noksapyeong Station Underground Art Garden aimed to create a special place used by citizens by continuously developing a wide variety of exhibitions and programs for citizens to stay leisurely and have a cultural experience for eight months. This is in line with the aim of the Seoul Museum of Art to create empathy with citizens by making public art not just a work of art, but a natural part of everyday urban space.
