The history and future of Cheongpadae on a 183-meter retaining wall

<Mangyeong Changpado> is a public painting project held in 2017 as part of the 'Cheongpa Street Canvas' project. As a predecessor to the 2018 Cheongpa Mirae Road, this public painting project was created in 2017 as a mural on a 183-meter retaining wall located in Cheongpa-dong, Cheongpa-ro 1. The mural was composed of images of various living scenes and landscapes in Cheongpa-dong, expressing the history and future of the area.

<We interviewed local residents who have lived in Cheongpa-dong for a long time and citizens who use Seoul Station to collect stories, history, and expectations about Cheongpa, as well as their impressions of Western Seoul Station, and enhanced the background knowledge with literature research and field visits to the surrounding area. Mid-career and young artists collaborated together from the composition of the sketch to the finalization of the mural, resulting in a mural where different senses coexist.

01 Planning

Cheongpa Street Canvas is a project to install public paintings that can be enjoyed while walking on a long city retaining wall of about 430 meters. It is designed to expand opportunities for artists who continue to work in flat media such as painting, graffiti, graphic design, illustration, webtoon, and photography to participate in public art, while dividing the large, neglected retaining wall into two sections and replacing one section every year. The safety fence was also replaced so that citizens could enjoy the artwork safely along the narrow sidewalks. The end result is a unique landscape unique to Seogye-dong and the longest mural connected to Seoul Road 7017. With the cooperation of the Korea Railroad Facilities Corporation and the Korea Railroad Corporation, in 2017, 'Mankyung Cheongpado' was planned for a 200-meter section of the upbound retaining wall near Seoul Station on the Gyeongbu Line, and in 2018, 'Cheongpamirae-do' was planned for two 235-meter sections of the retaining wall, connecting the previous year's work.

02 Process

Preliminary research and workshops

"In line with the purpose of Seoul Museum of Art, it is important to fully understand the space where the mural will be located before drawing a mural design.
In 2017, we conducted interviews with local residents who have lived in Cheongpa-dong for a long time and citizens who use Seoul Station to gather stories, history, expectations, and impressions of Cheongpa and Western Seoul Station. We also conducted literature research and field visits to places in the surrounding area, such as Yakhyun Cathedral, Baekbeom Kim Gu Memorial Hall, Hyochang Park, and Jungnim Market in Jungnim-dong, to systematically add background knowledge.

'Mankyung Cheongpado' is a public painting on a 183-meter retaining wall located in the first section of Cheongpado. It depicts the history and future of Cheongpado over time. The mural is composed of multi-layered images of various living scenes and landscapes to express the dynamic and open possibilities of our lives. To this end, interviews with residents of Cheongpadae-dong were conducted beforehand and recorded alongside the mural. You can see Yongwon, the second oldest temple in Korea, Yakhyun Cathedral, Son Ki-jeong Memorial Hall, and Seoul Station, past and present. From right to left, the work depicts the scenery of Cheongpadaeong that has changed over time.
For this public painting project, mid-career and young artists worked together from the composition of the sketch to the finalization of the mural. The collaboration of creators from different age groups resulted in a mural where different senses coexist. 'Mankyung Blue Wave', which was created using a transfer technique to create a painterly feel, was created by utilizing the handwriting of the participating artists, and the white margins and all-encompassing blue line drawings were harmonized by integrating layers of sensations from different styles.

"There was an iron bridge where Mapo Post Office is located, and there were shrimp vendors all the way to the Han River on both sides. Before the division between North and South Korea, fish boats used to come to Mapo from the west coast, so both roads to Mapo were shrimp shops."

"During the Japanese colonial period, this was a rich village, and when Seoul Station was built and developed, there was such a... And when the sewing factory was built, the rich people here moved to Hannam-dong or Gangnam, so there were many multi-family houses here, and there were many small houses in every alleyway. Foreigners come here a lot, and the night view from here is really good, and they shoot a lot, and people come here because the old Seoul landscape remains and the night view is beautiful."

"If you go to the community center, there's a map and a brief history of the area. Hyochang Park has a lot of history centered around it. There's a graveyard for the ancestors, the patriotic spirits, Dr. Ahn Jung-geun, Baek Bum Kim Gu. It's a place of worship, a place where people can relax."

"Cheongpa-dong has been the center of the land route connecting Hanyang and the provinces since ancient times. From Gyeongbukgung Palace to the provinces through Namdaemun, there is a place called Manchocheon, and you go from here to the Naru of the Han River. The starting point is the royal palace, and here is Cheongpa Station. The first station of the Joseon Station Participation System, Cheongpa Station. It's the first station from where officials like Amhungaesa leave Seoul, and the last station when they return to Seoul."

"Puul cheong hill pa, blue hill. It's Samgil, this is where it is. It used to be a lot of samgil, so there were a lot of buttercups. It was a green hill, and they all became houses. It was a boat bridge, and there was a big road in front of it, a stream."

"If you come a little further here, like the community center, it's the site of the old Malpyo Gomusin factory. When the export was at its peak after 1950-1960s, this site was used to export rugby balls, baseball gloves, and other things to the United States, so we used to get a lot of them and play because it was right in front of our house. And the Daesan Building, if you look at the side, there is a chimney, but it was a foundry. If you look at the map as a whole, the top is always north, and the Mancho Stream flows here, and when we were young, one side was not open, so we used to build a bridge here and go back and forth, when we were young."
